There have been some press releases on the IKEA lights. I actually went yesterday to buy some of them to play around.

The articles are interesting for those of us who have spent quite some time building IoT protocols, as it transpires which technologies IKEA chose in order to build their lightning system.

One interesting pointer by bitsex is that the gateway uses CoAP over UDP, and implements DTLS. For those who don’t know about CoAP, it is a REST protocol much like HTTP but for very constrained devices. This would make it one of the first (I might be wrong, please let me know if so) general-user products out there with CoAP on it. Being CoAP deployed more in industrial settings where being savvy makes a big difference.

Another interesting bit of information, is that it looks like the payload itself seems to use IPSO-like Objects as data model.

For those who don’t know, LWM2M is a protocol built around CoAP and use for managing devices. So things like firmware upgrades, error reports, etc. Apart form the management interfaces, LWM2M also adds a very simple Object Model for managing those devices. IPSO expands that set of Objects so that you can have application information too (e.g. sensor readings, commands, etc).

IPSO defines objects and resources that map to device properties. If we got to the IPSO repository and look in particular at the Light Control we can see that it allows a light to be turned on or off and its dimmer setting to be controlled as a % between 0 and 100.

When you see the payload of the GW you can see they are very similar, the resources that change are 5707:Fractional Time and few others. I have not yet figured out if the rest are part of OMA’s or other registry or proprietary ones, someone posted the IDs online but they provide little info at this point.

I have not yet had time to debug everything as I just bought my own lights yesterday. But I hope that other people looking into what the Trådfri GW can send and parse find it useful. Kudos to IKEA for their work. I hope that the next iteration has CoAP all the way to the endpoints. There many more things you can do with CoAP and that you can expand LWM2M with.

In fact data semantics seem to be a big problem for interoperability at this point, having companies like IKEA that have large deployments and interoperability in mind, rather than data mining is always good news for consumers.
